Communities and Schools across Wales have begun their journey of becoming Deforestation Free Champions- and you can too!
We want Wales to become the world’s first Deforestation Free Nation, which would mean that the people of Wales :-
-have the knowledge of how important tropical forests are for biodiversity and life on earth
-understand how tropical forests protect against climate change
-connect and work with the people who are protectors and guardians of tropical forests: the Indigenous People and our forest partners
-understand the link between deforestation and our food chain here in Wales, by learning about the everyday commodities causing deforestation: palm oil, coffee, cacao, soya feed and beef.
-take action to make a difference: we can all do our bit to help!

Caerphilly County Council
Fantastic news- in 2026 Caerphilly County Council has joined Monmouthshire County Council in becoming a Deforestation Free Champion!
Thanks to the fantastic way that local school Waunfawr Primary worked together with the council staff to learn about deforestation and how it is connected to us here in Wales and exploring alternative meals for their school menu, the councillors couldn’t say no to their passionate request to become a deforestation free champ!
Sharing their delicious taste-tests with the public in the Caerphilly Food Festival with Masterchef champion James Nathan and sustainability cook Angharad Underwood of the Cookalong Clwb was another highlight, sharing the benefits of choosing plant-based and freshly-prepared foods for our own health and of the planet- and it tasted great too!

Schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf on the deforestation free journey!
Learning: Young people in schools across Rhondda Cynon Taf county learned about the connection between tropical deforestation of beautiful rainforest habitat with the ingredients in our food: palm oil, coffee, cacao, soya feed and beef.
Is my school dinner adding to deforestation?
Pupils investigated the ingredients in their school meals, asking:-
-where the beef was sourced from
-whether the cacao was Fairtrade
-if the pizza contained palm oil
-if the ice cream and chicken contained embedded soy.
Rhondda Cynon Taf can boast the county with the most schools so far to have begun a deforestation free journey, we will keep you updated on their next steps!
Bridgend County Council
Taking Action:
The pupils of Litchard Primary on their deforestation free journey had some influential visitors join them for lunch at their school. Deputy First Minister at Welsh Government, Huw Irranca-Davies, and Kerry McCarthy, Minister for Climate Change and Net Zero from Parliament were keen to meet the children and discuss how to tackle deforestation.
Litchard pupils wanted to take action on deforestation by changing these ingredients on the Bridgend county school menu:-
-Sustainable palm oil in pizzas
-Organic flour from local farm- Slade Organics
-Locally grown vegetables
Will Bridgend County Borough Council add their deforestation free pizza to the school menu?
Carmarthen County Council
Ysgol Teilo Sant smashed it on their deforestation free journey- taking action on deforestation risk ingredients by getting in touch with:-
– their local council, Carmarthenshire
-food producers at Carmarthenshire Young Farmers
-school food suppliers Cegin Y Bobl
-school food suppliers Castell Howell.
