What is Youth COP Cymru?
Youth COP Cymru is an event for young people aged 9-14 from across Wales to meet and discuss what we can do here in Wales to tackle climate change and deforestation. But we can’t do it alone!
With an annual conference in North Wales and in South Wales, young people and schools will meet with leaders from Wales and the world, such as the Welsh Government & local councils; industry specialists in food and farming: and our forest partners who live in tropical rainforest regions.
With this many different perspectives, young people can really get clued up about all the issues, and find a way to be the change we want to see in the world!
What is a COP anyway?
Every year, people from all nations around the world meet to work out how to tackle climate change and slow the warming of our planet, at an international event called the “Conference of Parties”- better known as COP.
Although it is mostly VIP guests and current political leaders that are invited into the main discussions, COP is also a place where many other people gather to have their voices heard. You may find forest protection charities and environmental groups, like us, Size of Wales, or even Indigenous Peoples whose voices are crucial in the struggle against climate change.
However, access is not always equal— people representing fossil fuel companies often attend in large numbers, while many Indigenous peoples and communities most affected by climate change have fewer opportunities to be there and share their voice. This needs to change!
