To celebrate, we thought we’d share some of our favourite fun facts with you:
- They have very strong shoulders and arms and are 7 times stronger than a human! – can you swing and climb like an orangutan?
- When they are hurt they use medicinal plants to heal themselves! – how do you make yourself feel better when you are sick or hurt?
- Scientists have recently discovered that they use slang and can make beatboxing sounds! – wow, can you beatbox?
- They share 97% of our DNA (wow, they are so similar to us!)
- They eat a lootttt of different fruits including their favourites wild figs and durian! How many different fruits do you eat?
Orangutans need our help!
Sadly, orangutans are in trouble. They’re critically endangered which means there aren’t many left in the wild and they could go extinct (no longer exist). People are cutting down their forest to grow oil palm trees which give us palm oil.
We want to live in a world where these charming, funny and intelligent animals are thriving and swinging through life!
Want to know how you can help? Here are some of our top tips below:
- Eat more fruits and vegetables
- Look for the RSPO certified logo (this is where people are trying to grow palm oil in a way that doesn’t harm wildlife and cause new deforestation)
- Eat less junk foods (I know it’s delicious and this one is hard but just try your best!)
- Use your voice: have a conversation with someone, write to people in power, write to companies that use palm oil to check if they’re using sustainable palm oil
- Investigate packaging using the palm oil scanner app
